World Migratory Bird Day
Dim the Lights for Birds at Night!
May 14 is World Migratory Bird Day
Light pollution
- Light pollution is increasing globally. The amount of artificial light on the earth’s surface is increasing by at least 2 percent each year and could be much greater.
- Each year, light pollution contributes to the death of millions of birds from collisions. Excessive artificial light at night can disorient birds during their migration, leading to fatal collisions with illuminated buildings, communication towers, and other brightly lit structures.

How can you make a difference
Being aware how precarious the plight of world migratory birds is a great motivation to take action locally.
- become aware of what migratory birds visit your local habitats.
- discover more about the birds, habitats and their plight
- visit and observe if you can.
- take opportunities to be involved in clean up days or brd counts
- be night light aware
- review your outdoor lighting – can they be put on sensors?
- install solar lights in the garden that have a lower luminescence
- support campaigns to create night sky parks
- run Earth Hour (have candlelight at home – no power) for more than one day a year
